The Rahvuslik cardigan blends elements from two stunning vintage cardigans that Aleks found in her grandmother’s sketchbooks. They featured traditional-inspired colourwork patterns that accentuated the fronts and waist. The body of this cardigan is knitted flat working sideways. Each front features a stripe of Roosimine Estonian Inlay worked flat that runs from the shoulder to the base of the body. The sleeves are knitted in the round from the armhole, and a collar, followed by a button and buttohole band, are worked lastly.

Aleks Byrd’s Kindred Knits: Patterns from My Estonian Family Archives is a captivating collection of knitwear designs inspired by the old sketchbooks of her Estonian grandmother, Hilja, and some of her family’s heirloom crafts. The book features 15 patterns, ranging from socks and hats to sweaters and cardigans, worked in a variety of techniques — including lace, cables and colourwork, as well as Roosimine, a traditional Estonian inlay method. PATTERN NOTES
The body of this cardigan is knit flat working sideways. Each front features a stripe of Roosimine Estonian Inlay worked flat that runs from the shoulder to the base of the body. 
For Roosimine Estonian Inlay directions, see Techniques section. After the body is knit sideways, the shoulders are seamed together using Mattress Stitch. Stitches for the hem are picked up from the bottom edge. The hem is worked in a 1x1 rib 
pattern. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up around the armhole. The sleeve is knit in the round from the armhole down to the cuff. A collar, followed by a button and buttohole 
band, are worked flat. Stitches are increased on either side of the collar to create elongated points.
